It is a non-profit trade organization that is “dedicated to improving the regional, national and global competitiveness of the North American manufacturing and service sectors thorugh promotion and enhancement of robotics and related automation.” Some of the companies that this association hosts are: “robotic manufacturers, users, system integrators, component suppliers, research groups, and consulting firms.”

The RIA currently employs 22 people on its Board of Directors as of 2015. It is always expanding its network and welcoming robotic professionals as well as companies to join. On average, around five companies join every month. Although there is no solid number of individuals in this association, RIA represents 340 manufacturers, integrators, suppliers, users, firms, research groups, as well as educational institutions. In the year of 2014, a total of 27,685 robots were ordered from the companies in this association.
